A new survey shows most people are on board with a soccer stadium for the New York City Football Club.
Rumors have swirled about a plan to build an NYCFC stadium near Yankee Stadium, so the business improvement district decided to take the pulse of the community to get their thoughts. NYCFC currently plays home games at Yankee Stadium.
Rumored plans would place the stadium at the corner of River Avenue and 153rd Street. It would require taking over a nearby parking garage and factory.
Dr. Cary Goodman, executive director of the 161st BID, says most people surveyed want the neighborhood to own part of the stadium. Another condition those talked to want is a professional women's team playing in the stadium.
Participants also voiced concerns about gentrification, asking for affordable housing in addition to the stadium plan.
Over 200 people were questioned for the survey. Goodman thinks a reason for the positive response comes from NYCFC being involved in the community.
"I want to give credit to the team for cultivating a certain receptivity amongst the neighborhood," says Goodman.
Next steps for the plan involve meeting with team reps and the Economic Development Corporation.
In response to the survey, an NYCFC spokesperson says, "NYCFC is actively pursuing a permanent home in NYC and exploring several options, including working with Maddd Equities in the Bronx."
