A vacant corner lot that has sat empty for more than six decades in Highbridge is about to get turned into green space for the public.

Corporal Irwin Fischer Park, located along West 170th, has had a sign that says "park," but the land has never been developed or opened to function as a park.

Now thanks to funding from the de Blasio administration, $4.6 million will be allocated for the area.

The NYC Parks Department tells News 12 the design for the project is expected to be finished by February 2020. Officials say hopefully construction will begin in 2021.

"There will be a play area," says Paul Philps, of Community Board 4. "They are going to replace some of the trees so there will be plantings, there will be seating space for you know people to come and sit."

Neighbors say they are excited to hear the land will finally be usable and give kids a place to play.

Philps says requests to improve the area were in place before he became district manager of Community Board 4, so securing the funding is a big step.
