The Borough Council has approved creating a redevelopment plan for a variety of uses for the long-abandoned Amboy Cinemas in Sayreville.
The plan proposes a variety of commercial retail, conference center, hotel, office, recreational and professional uses.
The 19.5-acre site at Routes 9 and 35 has been abandoned for 17 years. The theater was once a major family outing destination, drawing long lines for iconic films such as the original "Star Wars" trilogy.
The site is one of the first things visitors see when entering the Middlesex County borough of Sayreville.
