A fatal accident along the Cross Bronx Expressway coupled with scheduled overnight construction caused bumper to bumper traffic on the roadway early Saturday morning.
Officials say 18-year-old Carlos Pereyra Batista was speeding around 4:30 a.m. westbound between Third Avenue and the Bronx River Parkway when he came upon stopped traffic and hit the back of a tractor-trailer.
The impact caused him to lose control and hit the guardrail before bouncing off a third car.
News 12 is told the driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries but Batista was pronounced dead at the scene. His 17-year-old passenger was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital.
Two other drivers involved stayed at the scene.
Authorities squeezed all traffic into a single lane before detouring them off the expressway at Exit 4B.
