Elected officials made their way to the Hunts Point Cooperative Market Tuesday afternoon, announcing an $18 million renovation project for Building C in the meat market area.
The building opened in 1972, and according to people on hand, has never had any sort of real work done or renovations.
This project will replace the old concrete facade, which has started to chip and fall apart, with a new, insulated steel one.
Aside from just looking better and being a facelift, the new facade is also insulated, with reflective black windows - something that is expected to make it more energy efficient.
"It's going to help us contain our refrigeration better, it's going help us with our distribution," said Andrew Sussman, the president of the market.
New York City Councilmember Rafael Salamanca, who helped secure $12 million of the funds, said this is "ensuring that they have the resources so that they can continue to keep their infrastructure going, and continue to feed Bronxites and New York."
The market employs around 2,400 people, many of them from the borough, and Sussman says "without these infrastructure investments, it would be very hard to keep these businesses here in the Bronx."
The renovation is not the only big project being announced at the Food Distribution Center this week.
Plans will be unveiled for the city's first electrical vehicle charging station - specifically for freight vehicles, like trucks - on Wednesday.
Volvo will also be presenting an electric garbage truck to a local business.
