Residents in Mount Eden say persistent loud music from businesses along Jerome Avenue is disrupting their daily lives.
They are calling for stronger enforcement to address what they describe as a long-standing quality-of-life issue.
Donna Gonez, a graduate student who lives in the neighborhood, said the noise continues at all hours of the night, making it difficult to sleep and focus on her studies.
"I wake up exhausted sometimes. I can't study. I'm in grad school," Gonez said. "It just makes me super anxious. I'm not getting a good quality sleep."
Gonez said she and other residents have filed multiple 311 complaints over the years, but the problem has persisted. In response, she created a petition to address what she calls ongoing noise pollution, which has gathered more than 100 signatures.
"I really don't think the protocols we have in place, such as filing a 311 complaint, are actually working or addressing the issue," she said. "They just continue to play the music all night."
Gonez said the noise is not coming from a single location, but from multiple auto body shops along Jerome Avenue. She said the issue has been ongoing for about eight years.
"I would never tell New Yorkers not to play music — it's so important," she said. "But when we're playing it at a level that's disruptive to a whole community, it becomes inconsiderate."
News 12 spoke with several auto body shops in the area. Some owners said the music was not coming from their businesses, while others said they would raise the concern with their managers.
Residents say they hope the attention will lead to meaningful change and improved enforcement to restore peace in the neighborhood.
