A very popular family-friendly event in Suffolk County took a violent turn last night in Huntington Station.

Suffolk County police said two teens were stabbed around 8:50 p.m. near the Huntington Manor Fire Department Firemen's Fair after a group of teenagers and young men got into a fight that escalated.

Huntington Manor Fire Chief Brian Christen said the incident happened at the park adjacent to the event and that firefighters on the scene rendered first aid to one of the victims.

"We were lucky to be there having this event. Otherwise, I don't know if this individual would have been able to get the help at that time," Christen said.

One boy, 14, was stabbed and seriously injured. A second boy, 17, sustained stab wounds not considered life-threatening, according to investigators. Both teens were taken to hospitals for treatment.

"Both males were seriously injured," said Suffolk Police Chief of Detectives William Doherty.

He said they are investigating the motive.

Doherty said they are not ruling out gang involvement.

The incident unfolded on the first night of the department's largest annual fundraising event, which continues through Saturday.

"It's horrible," Huntington Station resident Diane Chaney said. "There are no words for that. It just shouldn't happen."

Suffolk County police said increased patrols were planned in advance for the event and that 2nd Precinct officers will maintain the level of presence every night through the end of the event.

Christen said the fair is moving forward as originally planned.

"I just want the public to know that we're here for them, and we'll ensure their safety in any way possible - and they should feel comfortable coming to this event," he said.
