NYC officials pass citywide compost curbside pickup bills, starting with Brooklyn this year

City Council members have passed a new legislative package geared toward fighting the climate crisis with healthier waste disposal practices.
Council members say this is all part of a seven-year plan to help reduce the city’s carbon footprint. The bills will be mandatory for all New Yorkers to participate in the citywide compost curbside pickup, including all yard waste and food scraps.
Compost will be collected on the same day as recycling. The city asks residents to place their compost waste into brown cans, which will be provided by the Department of Sanitation to residents who will receive curbside compost collection for the first time.
For anyone who doesn’t participate, that trash might get a little expensive - with fines starting at $25 for the fifth offense and going all the way up to $100 for future offenses.
The environmentally friendly plan will be rolled throughout the city in cycles. All of Brooklyn will receive the curbside composting service by Oct. 2.; Bronx by March 25, 2024; then the entire city by Oct. 7, 2024.
