NYC officially now housing more asylum seekers in shelter system than New Yorkers

New York City is calling the current homelessness situation a humanitarian crisis, announcing that the city is now housing more asylum seekers than New Yorkers in the shelter system.
There are currently over 50,000 migrants under New York City care, getting help from places like Catholic Charities in Downtown Brooklyn. Many nonprofits are currently under contract with the city to provide this care, and New York City plans to extend those contracts.
New York City will invest $2.3 million in the satellite sites across the five boroughs. These sites are a lifeline for asylum seekers, offering help from job searches to food and housing. The investment comes as over 81,000 migrants have arrived in the city since last spring.
New York City also says there are plans to open up additional sites soon.
