Demolition has recently started on the iconic Amboy Cinemas in Sayreville.
Amboy Cinemas opened in 1979 and replaced a drive-in theater. It had 11 movie theater screens and became a destination for families.
It closed its doors back in 2005 due to infrastructure issues in the floors.
Last year the borough council approved an ordinance establishing a redevelopment plan for the site.
The space would be used for retail, office and recreation.
"They made a move independent of any action by borough to remove because it was abandoned," said Sayerville Business Administrator Greg Skarzynski. "It's been in disuse for over a decade and was a target for vandalism."
There is also no clear timeline on how long it will take for the building to be fully knocked down.
Town officials tell News 12 they are just happy the property owner is finally do something about the building.
