September marks Baby Safe Month, and experts and mothers are giving out tips for expecting and new parents.

Welcoming a new baby is an exciting but nerve-wracking time for parents.

The state's Department of Consumer Protection says that the ABCs are very important - alone, back and crib. Babies should aways sleep alone, on their backs, and inside of a safe crib.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says around 2,300 babies die annually due to sudden infant death syndrome. Data shows that 27% of those incidents can be attributed to accidental suffocation in bed.

BronxWorks offers weekly maternal infant safety classes. The group says that while co-sleeping with your newborn is discouraged, parents can opt for room-sharing instead.

"When we're asleep, unfortunately, we can roll over... so that creates a hazard," said Rachel Gill, program director for community health programs at BronxWorks. "The baby may roll off the bed, the parents may also roll over, so it's a big danger."

Experts also remind new parents to keep their children safe on the go by using rear-facing car seats and never leaving them unsupervised.
