A dozen people are recovering after being injured in a massive fire that broke out inside a building on Monday night in East New York.

The FDNY says it was around 6:30 p.m. when they received a call reporting the blaze at a two-story apartment building at 683 Sheffield Ave. near Linden Boulevard.

The fire started on the first floor, according to officials. Firefighters battled the flames at the scene until 9 p.m.

Neighbors tell News 12 that they watched some of the tenants jump from the windows to save their lives.

Authorities say two of the victims were seriously injured. However, all 12 are expected to survive.

The building currently has open violations from June relating to missing or faulty smoke detectors and the need for a self-closing door in one of the first-floor apartments, according to the NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development.

It is currently unclear whether those violations played any role in the fire spreading.
