Fairfield Fire Chief Denis McCarthy has been on leave since last week, the town's communications director confirms.

Lisa Clair did not provide any additional information as to why McCarthy is on leave.

McCarthy had previously faced criticism from the town's firefighters union regarding staffing issues. The union had called for his resignation.
