Police say a 14-year-old was struck by a car and killed on Thursday morning while on an e-bike in North Bellmore.

The victim's mother, Tania Salazar, told News 12 his name is Jayden Flores.

"Somebody from the school called me telling me that someone hit Jayden. A car hit Jayden," says Salazar.

Salazar says her son went to Wellington C. Mepham High School.

Police say he was riding the e-bike westbound on Alice Avenue crossing Bellmore Avenue when he was hit by an SUV.

Police say the driver of the SUV remained at the scene.

"I saw his bike over here and then they said, 'Are you his mom,' 'Yeah,' 'What's his name, what's your name' and then they just told me to park and then they took me to the hospital," says Salazar.

Neighbors say they heard a crash and ran outside.

One neighbor even says she gave CPR to the teen on her front lawn until paramedics came.

"I'm still in a state of shock," says the homeowner. "I'm glad I was able to meet his mom and tell her that he wasn't by himself."

Jayden's family is heartbroken.

"I don't know if it's right to say it but happy that he didn't suffer. He was such a good boy," says Salazar.

The Bellmore-Merrick School District says it's activated its crisis response team at Mepham and its five other schools. They say counselors, social workers and psychologists will be available as long as needed.
