Rotting debris piles up outside Wakefield apartment building

Right next to 855 East 233rd Street is a large pile of garbage. Tenant Victoria Lopez told News 12 she's been trying to get management to clean it up for months, but the problem just gets worse. She said it's all debris from construction on the roof.

A Wakefield apartment tenant says she's been trying to get building management to clean up rotting construction debris for months, but the problem just gets worse.

Victoria Lopez says the debris is from the building’s roof at 855 East 233rd Street.

The Department of Sanitation issued the building a warning and told management to get a dumpster for the construction waste. Lopez says a dumpster that was delivered there has been sitting full for weeks.

Her view outside her window is obstructed by the garbage, and she's afraid of the potential fire hazard and susceptibility to vermin. Her daughter's bedroom faces the trash.

"It gives me anxiety. It stresses me out when I'm walking to my car, coming home from work, walking the dog,” Lopez told News 12. “I just see it growing and growing and growing."

The building has 24 violations from the Department of Buildings. It also owes the city $13,000 in civil penalties.

DSNY said it ordered the building to remove the large container by Tuesday, or it will issue a summons.

News 12 also reached out to building management. A spokesperson said it will empty the dumpster and remove the construction debris on Tuesday.
