Some Long Islanders say massive snow mounds left behind after the recent blizzard are creating safety concerns and frustration in their neighborhoods.

With the possibility of more snow on the way, some Amityville residents say they fear similar situations could continue in the coming days.

A 15- to 20-toot pile of snow sits at the intersection of Union Avenue and Broadway, where it appears to have been pushed into the middle of the street. The mound is blocking part of the sidewalk and the left-turn lane, making it difficult for some drivers to see oncoming traffic.

The owner of Cornucopia's Restaurant on Broadway tells News 12 this situation needs to be addressed now.

"They spend so much money on I don't know what. Amityville always does a horrible job…The last storm, it took them maybe two weeks to clean up," said Jean Paul Navarrett of Amityville.

A village spokesperson says the Department of Public Works will return Wednesday morning to continue snow removal efforts, with crews focusing on large snow piles at street corners. The village also says the goal is to address the snow mounds along Broadway by no later than Wednesday night.

In North Massapequa, Dan Baxter says a snow mound at the corner of Poplar Street and Garden Avenue is blocking drivers’ visibility and damaging his property.

“It damaged the grass, the curb and everything else,” Baxter said.

He added that the mound makes it difficult for drivers to see oncoming traffic. “It’s hard to see when you’re coming around the corner. You can’t see over the mound. It’s like six foot.”

In Hicksville, drivers along Smith Street say a large snow mound is making it difficult to turn left onto Ronald Avenue.

“Just try to go slow, watch out for people, not go too fast,” said Tom Kirk of Hicksville.

News 12 has reached out to the Town of Oyster Bay about clearing the mounds and is awaiting a response.
