Crews are expected to work through the night and into Tuesday to shore up a building in Clifton after a tractor-trailer crashed into it early Monday morning.

The crash happened at 2:22 a.m. on the eastbound exit ramp from Route 3 to Passaic Avenue. The building houses Toptown Limo Ride.

Fire officials said the driver of the truck, which has a USA Truck logo, was trapped inside the cab after the impact and had to be extricated by firefighters. They also say a person on the second floor had to be rescued by ladder.

The building suffered significant damage and the truck remains on the scene.

“Extensive structural damage required painstaking work to safely support the structure before removal of the truck is possible. Multiple construction and engineering professionals have been assisting with evaluating the scene and planning the structural supports that will be needed. This is a very complex situation,” a spokesperson for the Clifton Police Department wrote in a statement.

A neighbor told News 12 she heard the crash when it happened.

“We just heard the loudest crash we have ever heard. It was like an explosion. We thought we were being bombed. It was crazy. There was smoke, and there was nobody around,” the neighbor said.

It was unclear what caused the truck to lose control.
