Residents and environmental groups have filed an emergency request to fight a plan by the Department of Homeland Security to convert a nearly 500,000-square-foot warehouse in Roxbury into an ICE jail.

Opponents say the proposed jail would overburden infrastructure, overflow sewer systems and impact the drinking water of more than 6 million New Jerseyans.

The facility is expected to house 1,500 detainees. Construction could begin as early as next month.
