Newark firefighters responded to a fire at approximately 10:27 p.m. Friday along 196 Jefferson St.
The fire spread to four surrounding buildings and was deemed a third alarm fire at 1:05 a.m.
Over 100 firefighters battled the flames. It was deemed under control at 3:24 a.m., according to Newark officials.
The fire left 59 individuals displaced, and six firefighters injured.
The firefighters were later treated at University Hospital, and the displaced individuals are being helped with relocation by the Newark Office of Emergency Management and American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Newark Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.
