The pathway on Independence Avenue and W. 261st Street has been deemed unsafe by multiple residents who live in the area.

"It's absolutely not anything accessible. I'm 71 and I wear hiking shoes to come down here," says Vicky Berger.

Berger lives in the area and says the community around Independence Avenue and W. 261st Street has tried to get officials to address this walkway for years.

Instead, she says, they aren’t getting any results.

"It's been in very bad shape since 1996. There have been various attempts and promises and research to figure out who was responsible," she says.

News 12 reached out to sources close to the Department of Transportation, who sent the following statement: “NYC DOT is exploring options for a long-term repair. We are reviewing what a full reconstruction might look like here and how much it would cost.”

Berger says that answer isn't good enough.

"It's nonsense, because everything costs money, and there are other streets in Riverdale that have been significantly re-engineered and replaced. And there's really no reason why this one should be on the bottom of the list," she says.

Berger says that she and her neighbors won't stop demanding answers from city agencies until they see results.
