The FDNY's Fire Safety Education Unit was in Fordham to share fire prevention tips and safety resources with residents following Monday's deadly apartment fire on Bainbridge Avenue.

The unit set up a table and some trucks with digital screens near the scene of the fire, which killed 1-year-old Liam Parks. Two other children are fighting for their lives in the hospital.

FDNY officials say several doors inside the building were left open during the fire. Fire officials are now urging residents to close doors during a fire to help slow the spread of smoke and flames.

"Working smoke alarms save lives. And prevention, also, and knowing what type of building that you live in and basically having a safety plan is very important. And that's what we teach," said Capt. Joseph Delligatti, with the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit.

The FDNY says it offers fire safety presentations and tabling events at schools and community organizations across the city.
