A two-alarm fire damaged a vacant mixed-use building on Unionport Road in Van Nest on Monday afternoon, according to the FDNY.
Fire officials say crews responded just before 1 p.m. to 1729 Unionport Road, where flames broke out in the rear portion of a three-story building that once housed a bakery on the ground floor with apartments above.
More than 140 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene. The fire was eventually upgraded to a second alarm as crews worked to locate the source of smoke hidden within the building’s walls and prevent flames from spreading to neighboring structures.
No injuries were reported.
The building was vacant at the time of the fire, leaving the block largely empty as firefighters battled the blaze. Fire marshals are now investigating what caused the fire.
A building manager, who declined to speak on camera, told News 12 her team had only taken over management of the property two weeks ago.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
