New York State Police arrested a lost hiker in Harriman State Park after a search led troopers to discover about 45 grams of psilocybin mushrooms.
The hiker, Jashiya B. Smith, 30, of Brooklyn, was part of a group of hikers near Stahahe Lake on June 15.
Police say Smith became separated from the group after allegedly taking the mushrooms and running into the woods during a dispute after becoming overwhelmed.
He later reached Arden Valley Road in the Town of Tuxedo and called for help.
During the response, troopers found the mushrooms and charged him with felony second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Smith was processed at the state police station in Monroe, arraigned in Tuxedo Town Court, and released on his own recognizance.
He is scheduled to return to court on July 8.
The investigation remains ongoing.
