A Bronx man was sentenced to six years in prison for assaulting a mail carrier last July, according to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jamie McDonald.

Prosecutors say John Garcia walked up behind an on-duty USPS worker and struck him repeatedly in the head and ear before he fled the scene. They say the two men did not know each other prior to the attack.

The worker was seriously injured and taken to a hospital where he received multiple stitches.

Garcia was arrested less than a month later and has been detained ever since.

At the time of the assault, Garcia was serving a three-year federal supervised release in connection with a prior conviction in the Southern District of New York of five counts of robbery.

Garcia spent 48 months in prison for that incident.
