A new migrant shelter is scheduled to open in the Bronx later this month.
The mayor’s office told News 12 that, by law, they’re not allowed to announce the exact address of migrant centers, but the new shelter is slated to open near Bruckner Boulevard.
A spokesperson said the city will transfer single men from Randall’s Island to the brick-and-mortar building in the Bronx, which has a capacity of 2,200 people.
This comes as the mayor’s office announced a total of 46 migrant shelters will be closed by June, and migrants in the shelter system had declined 27 straight weeks.
The New York Immigration Coalition [NYIC] said that while they applaud the city for closing several shelters, there needs to be more support instead of moving migrants around.
“We cannot continue to play whack-a-mole shelter expansion across the city of New York City because it is convenient for the mayor to do so,” said Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of NYIC. “Instead of actually investing in real solutions that we’ve been advocating for, such as getting people out of shelter, which I know sounds radical, and helping them get into permanent housing.”
News 12 reached out to Deputy Speaker Diana Ayala, who represents that section of the Bronx where the new shelter is opening. As of Sunday evening, News 12 has not received a response.
