Riding a bike through your city or a trail is the perfect way of spending a summer day. But, what if you have to use a bike share? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released tips for minimizing everyday risks of getting and spreading COVID-19, including when using shared bikes, scooters, skateboards, and other micro-mobility devices.
The CDC recommends that those using any type of transportation should follow these general principles: practice hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette, practice social distancing, wear cloth face coverings, stay home when sick, pack sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer, and limit your travel if you are at risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
In addition to the general rules above, here are three tips for minimizing COVID-19 risks when using shared bikes, scooters, skateboards, and other micro-mobility devices:
1. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces on the device (e.g., handlebars, gears, braking handles, locks etc.) or shared equipment before you use it. Use disinfecting wipes, if available.
2. Use touchless payment when available and if applicable.
3. After completing your trip, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
