On the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, a community came together at Jacobi Medical Center to honor those who were lost on that day.
The memorial began at 8:30 a.m. and featured a color guard procession, followed by poetry readings, a musical presentation and remarks from elected officials.
The ceremony has managed to forge bonds between people who lost family and friends on that day.
Among the attendees was Theresa Noel, whose son was trapped in one of the World Trade Center's towers when it collapsed.
"It is wonderful to see that Jacobi has this memorial and every year celebrates the lives of those who died," says Noel.
Laura Faulso came out to honor her late brother James, who was the chief of police for the Port Authority. James was helping a disabled person down a stairwell when the tower he was in collapsed.
Event organizers say the event isn't just about honoring the fallen, but also teaching younger generations about what happened that day.
