A 92-year-old Brooklyn man was scammed out of thousands by someone pretending to be an Amazon representative.

Police say the incident happened on Sept. 18 at Sterling Place and Butler Place. The victim answered multiple phone calls from different people posing as representatives from Amazon. They told him that his account was compromised and that he should withdraw $10,000 for them to safeguard.

The unsuspecting victim did so and placed the money in a box. Later, he agreed to meet with one of them who took the box of cash and escaped.

To avoid being scammed, Amazon says it’s important to keep in mind the following tips:

  • Never send money or gift cards to unknown callers

  • Verify suspicious emails, texts or calls with Amazon directly

  • Watch out for false urgency or unexpected orders

  • Keep your personal information private and secure

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
