Advocates and a group of legislators are calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to stop the collection of court fees, parking fines and other mandated surcharges.
Supporters of the measure came together in a Zoom conference to discuss how outstanding city fines and surcharges are impacting people who are struggling to pay their bills.
They believe those New Yorkers who owe parking fines and court fees should not have to choose between paying their rent or paying outstanding debt.
Advocates are also calling on Gov. Cuomo to pass an executive order that would stop the state from suspending licenses of drivers who owe parking fines.
They say collecting court fees and other city fines during the crisis further hurts vulnerable New Yorkers, and particularly those in low-income communities.
Supporters say Delaware, Maine and Oregon have stopped collecting parking and court fines during the pandemic. They believe New York should follow their example.
