Advocates: Credit checks limit affordable housing chances
Housing advocates in the Bronx say that many New Yorkers are not getting far while trying to find affordable housing because of credit checks.
Carmen Vega, a leader with Community Action for Safe Apartments, says many people are being rejected by developers after they apply for affordable housing.
"If you don't pass that credit check, you're not going anywhere," she says.
Rivera says that developers charge different rates when it comes to paying for credit and background checks.
She says scores on those checks can be affected by job loss, illness and bankruptcy.
