Bridgefield Civic Center calls for increased safety at dangerous intersection

The Bridgefield Civic Center is on the corner of Laconia Avenue and E. 212th Street, an intersection that people say is consistently problematic.

They just put up a new fence after a car plowed through it a few weeks ago.
"Cars tend to speed by down the street. It's very much a go at your own risk to cross this intersection," said Maddison Tirado, the youth program's director at the civic center.
News 12 cameras observed as cars sped down Laconia Avenue. It's a busy two-way street with bike lanes in both directions. There is a stop sign on E. 212th Street, but News 12 observed several cars roll right through it.
Tirado told News 12 they regularly use their outdoor space for events, but if someone were to crash into the building during an event, it could potentially lead to injuries and possibly deaths.
City data shows eight crashes at the intersection of Laconia Avenue and E. 212th Street in the last five years. Twenty-two people were injured in those crashes.
The Bridgefield Civic Center is calling on the Department of Transportation to install stop signs, speed bumps or traffic lights. It says it wants anything to slow cars and keep the community safe.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation but has not heard back.
