Roosevelt man accused of raping woman with autism over 3 years
An AHRC employee has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a woman with developmental disabilities.
Steven Harrison, 62, of Roosevelt, was working as a van driver for AHRC when the incidents occurred, Nassau police say.
He would pull over repeatedly and abuse the victim in a Home Depot parking lot, according to police.
The encounters started when she was 24 years old and lasted for 3 years.
Prosecutors say the victim told Harrison no but also did not consent based on mental condition.
The victim, who is now 27 years old, told a family member about the abuse just last week.
Harrison was arrested Tuesday at the AHRC in Brookville.
Harrison was charged with rape of a mentally disabled person for a 3-year period.
The victim was issued an order of protection and Harrison is being held on bail.
In a statement, AHRC says “We are aware of the recent criminal charges filed against Steven Harrison, a 24-year employee of the organization. He is currently suspended. Protecting the safety and rights of people with developmental disabilities is at the core of our mission. These allegations are deeply disturbing. We take all allegations of abuse seriously and are fully cooperating with law enforcement and regulatory agencies to support the investigative process and ensure appropriate action is taken. We remain committed to supporting a just outcome and upholding the highest standards of care.”
