The Alzheimer’s Foundation of American gave advice on how those afflicted by the illness can celebrate safely.
Some tips from the foundation include avoiding exposure to interactive decorations (which can cause people with Alzheimer’s to wander away from their own home), giving fruit instead of candy to avoid sugar-induced agitation and leaving the lights on.
"What's critically important during this holiday season when there's a lot of activities going on for Halloween -- keep the person you are caring for relaxed -- you have to provide some reassurance that they're safe,” said President and CEO Charles Fuschillo.
Most importantly, Fuschillo says, don't make them feel excluded.
"There's more than 6.2 million people in this country living with Alzheimer's disease. It's extremely prevalent. You can't go on this journey alone,” he said.
