In a tweet, Yang said "seeing the city in so much pain breaks my heart."
In December, Yang initially filed the paperwork to open a campaign account for mayor.
One of Yang's main focuses during his run for president was for a universal basic income, and his campaign video continued that message."We need to realize Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of a Guaranteed Minimum Income," he said in the video.
