Members of the community came together Saturday in Clairmont Village to call for an end to senseless violence.

It marked the 14th annual "Stop the Violence" event. It was held not only to demand an end to the violence, but to celebrate the lives of those who have been victimized by it. The event was started by Bernard Smith after his son Arnold was shot and killed while walking with a friend in August of 2000.

Participants also urged parents to teach their children to avoid violence, and to get rid of any illegal guns so their children do not gain access to them.

Police say people who want to get rid of illegal guns should contact their local precinct and ask how to turn in their unwanted firearms.
