Welcome back to ask the borough president here on News 12, the Bronx with Bronx BP, Vanessa Gibson. I wanna touch on another timely topic with the summer months and swimming safety. So top of mind, I know you and a bunch of other elected officials across the city have called for an extension of lifeguards through 8 p.m. at city beaches coming off the tragic deaths. I know of at least two sisters here in the Bronx as well as several others. Um Swimming after lifeguards were off duty. We had the mayor here on ask the mayor last week, we asked him about that and whether he'd consider it, his response was that people should follow the rules as they are your take on his take on that. We can change the rules and we can easily make a decision to work with all of our stakeholders to extend beach hours. Uh Number one, especially during a heat wave and we can also work with lifeguards and expand their hours beyond 6 p.m. The six drownings that we have experienced in New York City since the summer started, have all been of individuals drowning after six o'clock when lifeguards have gotten off duty. So, yes, NYPD Harbor patrol. The local precinct. We have drones. That's great. But we need lifeguards. I am not going to tell the parents of two daughters that they lost in a horrific, horrific drowning. That the answer is that you need to learn how to swim or you need to follow the rules that's not acceptable to me. We can do more on education, we can have more swimming classes that are free. We can work with New New York City public schools, Dy CD, we can look at indoor pools. So many of our CB OS that offer swimming classes. But guess what? We need to fund them more so that we can expand the population of who we serve. Yes, we have to follow the rules, but we also have to look at what has happened in this summer season. So I've joined the Queensboro president, the Brooklyn borough president myself and many colleagues in the City council. And we're going to keep talking about this even beyond the summer season. We're not going to allow the deaths of these New Yorkers to be in vain. If we can do more around education outreach, we can do more on swimming classes, making sure they're free. They're more accessible, working with all of our CB OS, we will do that. But one thing we have to consider are the importance and the value of life guards. They need to work past 6 p.m. That's the reality. So we can tell teenagers don't swim in the beach past 6 p.m. and guess what happens? They do it anyway. And that's what happens. And so we have to understand the reality of what we're facing and we have to realize that this is about saving lives, keeping beach goers safe and reminding them that yes, there are rules. But at any given time, when we feel that we're in these challenging situations, we should be in consideration of changing some of those rules. I think you make such a good point when you talk about responding to the reality that becomes the key. I do wanna get to some of the callers that we have on the line and I believe starting with Wanda, who has a question for the VP Wanda. Thanks so much for being with us. What's your question? Good evening. My name is Wanda Cawley. I live in the butler houses in the Bronx, but I grew up on 100 and 56 in the Brook Avenue in, in the, um, the Mar senior section of 100 49th Street and Third Avenue. My question is, when is someone gonna get around to cleaning up that area of 100 49th and Third Avenue. The, the, the junkies over there is terrible. And then they're selling, it just looked like a junkyard over there. I mean, I was, I was raised here in New York, but I was born in South Carolina. I, that, that used to be my stumping ground. It never looked as worse as it looks. Now today I, I wonder if anybody cares. It just looks horrible over there. I don't travel much over there now that I'm on a walker, you know, but I go there for certain things because I'll never forget Third Avenue. That was where my mother stopped when I was little, you know, I just was concerned about. It seems like no one cares to go over there and see why all of this is going on. And it's, I, I feel like no one cares. They fixed up certain areas for people to sit after they grocery shop. You can't because the junkies are laying all in the way they coming up to you at the bus stop begging for a dollar and up. Wow. I'm just, I'm just surprised I feel like no one cares. I'm in my over 60 now and it's like, you know, I, I'm wondering whenever and is someone gonna ever get over to 100 49 street and Third Avenue in the Bronx? I just wanna make sure that the BP has enough time to answer the question. I understand and I share her concerns. The hub 149, 3rd Avenue is one of our busiest commercial corridors in the Bronx and the city. A lot of foot traffic. A lot of vendors, many of whom are not licensed some are the Third Avenue bid. We have leadership there with Pedro Suarez. We walk throughs with DS Ny Department of Consumer Worker Protection uh as well as all of the relevant agencies. Remember the South Bronx is home to a lot of drug treatment programs. That area is saturated with day programs as well as other programs that serve as people that are going through the process of healing and recovery. They're dealing with an addiction, substance abuse, something of that nature. And so the clients are always saturated in that area when they're going to and from programs and that if they don't have any other responsibilities like a job or anything else, they loiter and they hang out, right. And that is the challenge we're having. So it is a multifaceted process and please know that not only do we care, but we all deserve better and we want to make sure that areas like the hub get the attention it deserves from clean up services, additional sanitation services, uh more keeping more power, washing all of that. We have to make sure because on any given day you see a crowd and that's usually where you have the intersection with the bus and the train, everyone comes to the hub. And so it's something that is a priority as well as I've been working with Wilma Alonso at Fordham. I'm working with council member Sanchez on Kingsbridge because these are areas where we have a lot of vendors. And so we have to work with the street vendor project. We're working with our, you know, merchants associations and our bids because we have to come to a medium where there's room for both of us to operate, but they have to be licensed and there's certain spaces where they can and cannot be so be on the lookout. There will be a lot more coming. I assure you, we have not forgotten about the hub. We will make sure that it is prioritized in our continuous conversations, great reassurance for Wanda there and BP real quick on the topic of the legal dumping across the bur overall thing that we have been covering quite often all over. What else do we need to do to really deter, we need people to keep calling 311, calling us, sending us pictures and images. Uh We call sanitation, we do enforcements overnight because we have a lot of commercial residential areas where people come into the neighborhood and illegally dump large items, equipment, household items. It's un, it's unbelievable. So we're working on that with parks with DS NY and everyone else involved. All right. Welcome back to ask the borough president here on News 12 of the Bronx with Bronx BP, Vanessa Gibson. And it is time for our health tips this month, National Immunization Awareness Month as we look ahead to August as we look ahead. So we are promoting vaccines, making sure we protect uh our New Yorkers and Bronx sites from serious and life threatening diseases such as meas measles, polio and the flu and our kids are getting ready to go back to school. So it's crucial to see your health care provider to ensure your child and Children are up to date with all their vaccinations as they prepare. We're also paying particular attention to many of our migrant families because they are not documented and we wanna make sure that as they get ready to send their Children back to school, that they also get their Children, uh their shots. So if you need a provider, NYC health and hospitals provides care to all New Yorkers regardless of your staff, this and your ability to pay, please call 311 call our office at 590 3500. We're happy to help connect any family member to a local health care provider so they can get their Children um immunization for school. Such a great resource to remind all of our families that's available here through the city. And also a reminder that September is gonna be here before we know it. It is a back to school checkups and everything else that comes with that. As we do, look ahead to the fall. I do wanna also live in the present a little bit. What summer? Without the Dominican parade here in the Bronx. And we had it here on Sunday. Everyone having a whole lot of fun over on the Grand concourse. What were some of the highlights for you? We saw you there, we caught up with you. It was hot, it was, it was a lot of people. As you can see my sage is La Madrina and just celebrating the largest Latino community in the Bronx uh residents from the Dominican Republic. I've been to Santiago Santo Domingo. Our deputy borough president proudly represents as the first Latina, the first Dominicana and just celebrating the Dominican culture heritage pride. We have Dominicans in so many spaces from first responders, law enforcement, educated social workers, uh business owners, grocery store workers, uh they own supermarkets and it matters matters when you see a reflection of you and your leadership. So it matters when we celebrate the Bronx Dominican Day parade. It was the 35th annual La Grand Parada Dominicana. So I wanna recognize our president Felipe Febles and the entire team, we had elected officials. Look at the floats, just a beautiful sea of red, white and blue along the grand concourse. It's so much fun to re-watch and kind of relive the moment and it seems like every year it is bigger and better. So we have a lot of people to visit too. Shout out to everyone that visited. That's not from the Bronx, from Northern Manhattan and Brooklyn, three borough presidents. We're here, Brooklyn Manhattan and the Bronx. I want to get back to some of the callers who've been waiting patiently on the line with their questions and comments including Ronald from Mott Haven. Ronald. Thanks so much for joining us this evening and go ahead with your message for the BP whenever you're ready. Ok. Thank you very much uh for taking the time to take my call. So first, I just want to let Vanessa Gibson, Vanessa Gibson. Thank you. We're here. Ok. I'm sorry. Ok. So I just want to let Vanessa Gibson know that I highly appreciate her, her team's help. I had reached out some time ago because I was struggling with an eviction case and I reached out to your team. I was waiting and waiting and then in a short period of time, I was able to get a hold of y'all and y'all was able to um assist in that matter. So I just wanted to let you all know. I appreciate it. Thank you so much. We are so glad to hear that. I'm glad everything worked out for you. We love to see a positive. Absolutely. What was it? Especially with residents facing eviction. You know, I was, you know, one of the authors of the right to council legislation back in 2014 with BP Mark Levine. And we believe that, you know, everyone that is facing eviction should be entitled to a free lawyer and we wanna make sure that the city is complying with that. We have thousands of evictions every year in the Bronx and those are families with Children that gets thrown into the shelter system and it's not acceptable. So I'm so glad it worked out for you, Ron and another reminder of just the resources that are available and it's just a matter of getting connected to the right person. So thank you for your work on that. I do wanna get to another caller who's been waiting on the line as well. Kel from Castle Hill, Kel, thanks so much for the call this evening and ask your question whenever you're ready. Yes, I'm, I want to know we are paying so much attention to evs and there's only one high speed charging station in the Bronx that's on uh B Plaza. Now, if you go there right now, there is a line, there's a line 24 hours a day. Is there anything we can do to get more charging station? Especially the Tesla charging station? Because all the taxis now are Tesla. Thank you a good interesting because it's a great question, especially when you think about it from the perspective of the cab driver, a taxi driver, moving towards electric vehicles and ev charging stations, right? We have more E vehicles on the road, but we don't have enough charging stations. So we've been working with Decca on the city side with the municipal workforce and all of our fleet to make sure that we have stations for uh e vehicles under the municipal program, but also on the private sector and everyday residents in our borough that purchase an EV, we wanna make sure we have more charging stations. So there are two companies we've been working with one of them being uh revel uh that is working on a new EV charging site down in the South Bronx in the Hunts Point area. We also have another one slated for the Longwood Mott Haven community. And as we're able to talk some more, I mean, it's about building out the infrastructure and making sure that we have the, the infrastructure that is necessary to build it out. But we also have the customer base which we know we do. It's something that's a fairly new concept for us. Many of us have not uh known about E vehicles. They have not been around for a very long time. So a lot of this is about education, but outside of Bay Plaza, we should offer more and that's something we're actively working on with all of my colleagues in government. So it's to be continued, we will work on it. And then on the other side too, I also wanna recognize when it comes to the repair of e vehicles. We also need to make sure that the auto body industry uh is up to speed when it comes to the repairs. And that's something that we're trying to work with the the small business services on. Because when it comes to training certification programs, we should make sure that all of our mechanics that work at auto body places are able to also work on e vehicles as well. Such a good point, if we're gonna make the structure available, then how do we make the repairs available as well? This is supporting our, you know, local mechanics and getting those skills is hugely important. I wanna get to a social media question that we had posted online from a Twitter user um earlier today who said, what is being done about landlords refuse to maintain the many housing lottery apartments. And this person in particular highlighted 1939 West Farms Road. They claim it's disgusting infested, neglected. So the question here is how do we hold landlords for those housing, lottery apartments accountable? Is there a different process to go through? So remember all of it, the housing lottery housing connect all goes through HPD. And if you are selected for a brand new apartment, um you are able to move into that apartment, but the landlord has to maintain it. Uh If it's renovated, it's brand new, whether it's in one of those categories. But the reality is if any tenant is living in our borough, in those types of conditions, it's unacceptable. And we need you to call a city called 311 because we will work with the department of buildings. We will work with HPD. Landlords have to be held accountable, but people need to come forward and a lot of our tenants don't like to for fear of retribution retaliation. They could be undocumented, they could be immigrants and they don't wanna come forward because landlords do harass tenants, not all but some just like we have great tenants, we have some tenants that are not so great, right? It works on both sides but no one should ever live in those types of conditions when you're paying your rent every single month. And so we need residents to call our office to call 311. We work closely with HPD. We work with DOB. I mean there have been many, many actions as you know, there was a landlord ultimately where there was an action taken against him and there was a warrant issued for his arrest and he ended up on Rikers Island, right? And so that was extreme. But for those landlords that do not take care of their buildings, we have to hold them accountable. We need them to reach out though, landlords need help too because you have so many small landlords that don't have a lot of tenants and then you have larger landlords. So regardless of the size, we need to make sure that there's a system where people are coming forward so that we can help them individually. But also that helps the whole building as well because if the elevator is not working, that affects everyone. If you don't have heat, hot water, that affects everyone. So we have to make sure that tenants feel comfortable coming forward, even anonymously, they can call our office and we will follow up and we will identify who this landlord is at West Farms. And I wanted to touch on exactly what you just mentioned with those elevator outages specifically when we're talking about elevators. It's something that we've been covering so often, whether it's a private building or uh a building in a public housing complex. I mean, I think back to last month in the extreme heat where there were residents over at the Mitchell houses who could not the flights of stairs they had to and we're essentially trapped either outside or inside of their homes for days on end. What do we need to do to really fix the infrastructure issues? And so many of the buildings we see her across the. So a lot of the complaints that we have seen has been Night New York City public housing and that's unacceptable. Some of these developments are going through elevated modernization projects. It's just taking too long. Right. I put money in for more air rights and they're still going through the process. Butler houses, Webster, new roof, new HV, new elevators. These are things that residents of public housing deserve and they've been so patient for all this time. But in other buildings that are not nature where there's a private landlord, we have to make sure that again, the landlord is responsible for the upgrades and the modernization and the upkeep of that elevator. And we have to find ways to help support these landlords that are not doing what they're supposed to do. So in the most extreme cases when it's an emergency, hpddob will come in and they'll do the work and then they fine and bill it to the landlord that has happened. But in a lot of these single story, uh multi family dwellings where you have one elevator, 67 story building. And I see seniors with canes and stuck in their apartments not going to doctor medical appointments because they can't get out is unacceptable. Those are our parents and we can't accept that for anyone. And so again, I go back to the same point I made where I need people to come forward and news 12 as you report, we follow up as well and we will get to the bottom of this. We'll find out what's happening because what tends to happen there's an elevator part that we're waiting for that's coming from across the country, right? We need more elevator companies. They're far and few. And why do the parts take so long to get to the Bronx? That's another issue that sometimes tenants may or may not know. And so signage communication is important. A lot of times tenants don't know what's happening because their landlord or management are not communicating that. And so there's a lot of things we can do better to really change this conversation. But the bottom line is if your elevator is out and it's not working, we need to know about it because we need to find out what's happening, what the landlord and our management are doing so that we can help them expedite that repair or ultimately, that entire replacement comes back to make that complaint. Absolutely. Please call we need because we don't know. I mean, they live in these buildings, they are raising their families and we need them to speak up and help us so that we can help them and have that documented record too of all those complaints. We've been talking about a lot of really hyper local issues to kind of expand the viewpoint, national politics. We're coming off a whirlwind week in presidential politics, a new seeming democratic candidate in Kamala Harris for the presidency. What was your reaction to President Biden stepping aside? Were you at all surprised and of course endorsing his VP to become the next president. Two Sundays ago. I was heading to my summer concert at South View Park and I got a text message and it was his statement to the American people. I was shocked, I didn't think that he would ultimately make that decision. But what a noble uh statesman uh just dedicated his life to public service on behalf of the American people. I'm grateful to President Joe Biden and his wife. Of course, first lady, Doctor Joe Biden. And I'm so glad that President Biden thought it was important to recognize the value of a vice president. That's what a VP is in place for in the event she can step up. Kamala Harris is educated. She's ready to serve as a prosecutor, former attorney general, former US senator. She can do this and we just need to mobilize and get people out to vote because voting matters. So I'm a delegate for the DNC. I was on the call with 44,000 black women across the nation. I've been on multiple calls to make sure that I do my part as a borough president to galvanize my borough because the Bronx has some of the lowest voting turnouts. So we have to make sure we get out uh less than 100 days left to go. Please make sure you do your part, register to vote and come out and vote in November and everything is on the line. Welcome back to ask the borough president here on news from the Bronx, the Bronx VP, Vanessa Gibson. We have already covered so many different topics and a lot of ground and the calls keep coming. We've got Evelyn on the line joining us tonight from Williams Bridge. Evelyn, thanks so much for calling in. And what's your question for the BP? Um, good evening, Miss Gibson. Uh, I have a situation. I have a son that's got about six diagnosis. He's with Advanced Care Alliance through OPW DD and Evelyn. Yeah. Maybe we could hear you a little bit better if you put the TV on in the background. Yeah, go ahead. Um, the problem is that, um, he doesn't know how to advocate for himself and I just need guidance. I just need guidance, you know? And, um, how old is he, Evelyn? Can she hear us? I think we're a little bit of that. He lives in Brooklyn and I'm in the Bronx and he's 25 but he's got, uh, quite a few diagnosis, autistic, bipolar, schizophrenia. Let's see, Evelyn, if there's any resources that we could perhaps. So, I would love to talk to Evelyn offline about some of the specific needs that her son has. Um, OPW DD Officer of People with disabilities and developmental disabilities is a, is a state agency. And so they have a lot of services in the city of New York, a lot of programs D DS O and others. And I wanna make sure my ombudsman team can work with mom on what specific programs that we can refer her to in Brooklyn wherever he is. And I also wonder of his living situation, what type of how is here? And if it's SRO transitional housing, supportive housing, uh you know, I would love to understand what that looks like because there are sometimes depending on the housing uh situation, there are supportive housing with not for profits that run social services on the ground so that you have uh mental health services, you have uh access to psychiatrists, clinicians, uh they do workforce development, they do other, you know, wrap around services. So we would love to talk more offline just to see, but just in general, um we always wanna make sure that people disabilities have services. I have a disability advisory council. So we work with a lot of non for profits, organizations like bills and others that really work closely with the mayor's office for People With Disabilities. Christina Curry, our commissioner from the Bronx and we do a lot. We just had an event earlier this month focused on just talking about disability advisory and pride Month for July and how we can really amplify the voices of people living with disabilities. And we also just had the anniversary of the Kids With Disabilities Act. So there's a lot that we are doing. We can do more, but we also have to make sure that we connect parents to services for their Children. I mean, even just hearing about the support of housing opportunities, that's the one stop shop and connecting parents and making them aware of those opportunities would be huge. So we'll talk offline. Absolutely. We'll connect you with everyone and make sure you get her information. I wanna get to as many callers as we can. What's your question? Ok. Ok. Can you hear us Manuela? Yes, I can. Ok. You can go ahead with your question. Ok. My name is Manuela. And by by some coincidence, you are speaking just now of the building where I live 1939 West Moms Road. I live with my daughter. I'm 81 years old. I have three cents in my heart. I have senior um here Protective Service. I am trying to find an apartment. I've been going every place that people send me to try to get a voucher. I need a voucher to get my own place. Um, I can live with my daughter. She lives in section eight apartment and I can't be in her house. I would like to help to try to get a about her. I have had three heart attacks. I had three stents in my heart. I sleep on the sofa in the living room. I'm in pain all the time. I need my own place. I, I need my own space. Manuela, we can tell this is an emotional topic for you. I just wanna make sure that the BP has enough time to adequately. So clearly, this is a building that of course of issue. What a coincidence that another tenant called tonight from that building as well. So Manuela, we will help you, we will talk offline and my on Buns team, we will identify as, as best we can the best type of housing for you uh for older adults with supportive services on site. Um because we wanna make sure that you should not be in pain uh that you have a sufficient uh medical care um health care plan, uh whether it's Medicaid or Medicare. Uh We do wanna make sure that she gets connected to that and to really live independent. A lot of our older adults can live independent but they're forced to live with their Children and others because they either can't afford the rent or they can't find their own apartment. And as much as people don't acknowledge and admit it, senior housing is really hard to get and the turnover is really low. We have a lot of older adults that are living much longer. That's a good thing. Um But we don't build enough senior housing. So that's another conversation when it comes to housing and accelerating that. But nonetheless, we will work with Manuela um to figure out, you know, just her income and, and what we can help her with in terms of her permanent housing. But absolutely. And what do you think her struggle in obtaining a voucher? How does that speak to perhaps the larger issues for people overall in obtaining that resource? Because sometimes the way the system is, is you have to be in the shelter system to apply for a voucher and you also have to have sometimes an active P A case. Uh And so there are certain eligibility requirements that a lot of people on the that don't have and then sometimes you can apply to HR A on your own, but you have to be eligible. Um And then there are a lot of older adults that are living with a loved one on a couch sleeping and they don't wanna go through the shelter system and they should have to. And so we have to get beyond those barriers and work with HR A to figure out the best housing that's conducive to her needs. And we'll make sure to connect you with her more as the VP continues here on news from the Bronx right after this.

Welcome back to ask the borough president with Bronx VP Vanessa Gibson meeting in the middle of the summer, which is always a busy time, a lot going on and then looking ahead to more going on as we head to the fall, which is gonna be here before you know it absolutely down, some of the things that we've got going on. So this Thursday, August 1st, we are honoring our heroes, career connection. So we're working specifically with veterans, our Veterans Advisory council and we're having a career fair for veterans and non veterans. A welcome at Bronx Borough Hall this Thursday, August 1st from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in partnership with the New York City, uh, office of Veterans Services and our commissioner James Hendon, another Bronx site, uh, this Saturday, August 3rd. We're going back to Fordham Night Market for our summer concert series which are typically on Sundays. So this Saturday we're joining with Marco at the Fordham Night Market. We're gonna be at Fordham Plaza this Saturday, August 3rd from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and then the following Sunday, which is August of 11th. Then the following Sunday, August 18th, August 25th and Sunday, September 1st are all our remaining Sunday schedules for the summer concert series will be at Bronx Park, East Saint Mary's Park, Ferry Point Park and then we end at Co Op City follow us because of the construction at Orchard Beach, but it's opening next year. So we look forward to, we're looking forward to some trips in the interim and you get to see the beauty of the Bronx. We're the greenest borough. We are introduce us to all our part. And on Thursday, August 8th, our education unit, we're hosting our first back to school health and literacy fair. It's gonna be down in the South Bronx at PS 65 Mother Hale Academy at 677 East 1 41st Street from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, August the eighth. And then we're partnering with our good friend Flora Montez Bronx Fashion Week. We're celebrating 10 years, Bronx fashion. We're gonna have a fashion show at Borough Hall on Thursday, September 5th from six PM to 9 p.m. at Bronx. See all of the styles and our African Heritage festival. It's the first Sunday, Sunday, October 6th is our 30th anniversary of Tour de Bronx. We are adding more sponsors. It's gonna be great, bigger than better ever than before and we are really focused on young people. We're gonna have the 10 mile, 25 mile and the 40 mile. Now, I'm gonna do the 25 again.
