Audit: Problems found in Bronx post offices
An audit released by the United States Postal Service confirms complaints about wait times and delivery problems with several Bronx post offices.
Bronx residents have long complained about long lines, rude employees and lost or late mail. City Councilman Rafael Salamanca had called for the audit in the fall after receiving an influx of complaints in the borough.
"All we're asking for is our fair share," Salamanca says. "Come to our buildings. Deliver our mail. We want to come to a clean post office — where we don't have to wait hours and hours to pick up packages."
The audit found that mail delivery was indeed delayed at nine of the borough's post offices, but it blamed poor access to recipients' buildings or damaged, unsecured mailboxes that stopped carriers from placing mail inside.
It also found that line waiting times varied widely, from seven minutes to more than an hour. For people on pickup lines, the average was about 12 minutes or more. The USPS blamed a high number of undelivered packages and inefficient storage methods for the delays.
The Hunts Point, Morrisania, Mott Haven, Soundview and West Farms post offices faced significant mail problems, according to the report. Every neighborhood listed had problems with unsecured mailboxes.
The Postal Service says it's implementing corrective measures that include new parcel lockers, on-site reviews and public meetings with residents.
Salamanca's office will also be hosting town hall meetings with the postmaster.
