Two NYPD officers were struck by gunfire in Crown Heights while responding to a violent incident, according to the NYPD. 

Police tell News 12 that the officers were shot inside of an apartment at 1969 Bergen Street just after 3 p.m. on Tuesday. 

The call was made to police for an assault in progress, according to law enforcement officials. The woman calling said her son was assaulting her inside of her apartment. Four NYPD personnel responded to the scene, where they encountered 39-year-old Melvin Butler with the victim. 

According to the NYPD, Butler resisted arrest, causing a violent struggle to take place. Police say Butler grabbed hold of an officer's firearm during the scuffle and began to fire shots, striking one officer in the left hand and another officer in the left thigh. 

Butler was shot multiple times in the incident, and is currently in critical but stable condition.

The NYPD says that Butler has an extensive arrest history, including six prior arrests in New York City and one in North Carolina. Butler was arrested twice in 2023 for two separate domestic violence incidents. 

Butler has not yet been charged but was apprehended by police following the incident. Both officers who suffered gunshot wounds are expected to fully recover from their injuries.
