It’s not often that you can experience Yankee Stadium, the Apollo Theatre and New York-Presbyterian Hospital under one roof. But it’s all on display this holiday season at the Museum of the City of New York.
It’s all part of Gingerbread NYC: The Great Borough Bakeoff.
Bakers from across the five boroughs created gingerbread versions of iconic New York City locations.
“The Museum of the City of New York has been New York’s storyteller for 100 years and the story of the holidays has been around forever and it’s a big part of New York City history and we thought what better way to tell it than through gingerbread?” COO, Jerry Gallagher, told News 12 New York.
And no detail was spared - a sweet version of the cloisters took sixty hours to build. Top honors went to Bronx baker, Patty Lambrou-Kalognomas, who built a gingerbread version of the spot where hip-hop was born – 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the Bronx of course. She says the people of the Bronx are its best asset.
“We’re super colorful, we’re characters, we’re fun, we’re crazy, the fact that we have so much to share and the fact that hip hop is from the Bronx, it’s things like this that gives us a chance to honor that and represent the Bronx,” Lambrou-Kalognomas said.
“At the shop, there’s six of us now and we’re all Bronx girls, so it’s a fully female Bronx-born bakery,” she added of her Pelham bakery, Patty Pops.
The judges may have already picked their favorite gingerbread creation, but there’s still time for museum visitors to vote through the end of the year. The exhibition closes on Jan 15.
