A Bronx teacher is one of the top ten finalists for this year’s Grammy Music Educator Award.
Melissa Salguero has been teaching music at P.S. 48 for the past 7 years and her music program has gained national attention – even appearing on Ellen DeGeneres.
Salguero says she tries to incorporate science and history into her lessons. For one lesson, she turned a carrot into a clarinet.
“I do things really different, I'm always looking for new experiences,” says Salguero. “I find that my students do so much better when there's a hands on activity or something visually they can see.”
School administrators say the music program has grown under Salguero’s leadership. Her class even had the opportunity to sing Christmas songs at Times Square.
The winner of the Grammy Music Educator Award will be announced on Jan. 28.
