The Betances Houses in the Bronx is just one of a number of developments slated for a makeover as part of NYCHA's $13 billion repair plan.
Starting next month, residents at the Betances Houses will get new kitchens, bathrooms, flooring, boilers and more.
A total of 21 other NYCHA developments in Manhattan and Brooklyn will also be upgraded. According to Mayor Bill de Blasio, a total of 62,000 apartments will be converted to Section 8 funding and stay permanently affordable.
City officials say the repairs will be paid for by public and private partnerships, including the Rental Assistance Demonstration Program also known as RAD. The Betances Houses officially converted to Section 8 through RAD last week.
Mayor de Blasio says all 140,000 residents involved in the conversions will keep their rights as public housing residents and pay rent limited to 30 percent of their income.
