A scam is hitting the Bronx that is targeting those who need work.
The Better Business Bureau says between September 2017 and this month, around $7,000 was taken by employment scams, and another $1,600 by fake check scams.
Investigators say to look out for being contacted out of the blue for work by someone you do not know, or are offered a job you are severely under-qualified for with a salary that seems too good to be true.
It is important to check for red flags when seeking employment.They say employees should not have to pay for training or clothing and equipment. They also say there should never be application fees.
BBB President Claire Rosenweig explained to News 12 how one scam tricks people into being a secret shopper by asking someone to buy gift cards to test employees, then asking for those cards to be sent back to them.
The BBB says if someone sends money and is rushing the person to use their own to think twice about the person they are talking to.
They add that the best thing a person can do to protect themselves is to do their own research by looking for company reviews.
