A fully booked blood drive occurred in Fairfield on Wednesday to help the American Red Cross as it deals with an unprecedented blood shortage.

The event was in response to a shortage causing problems for doctors and hospitals. Fairfield residents made their way to the Scandinavian Club to help in the fight.

"It feels good to do what I can,” said one of the donors.

Organizers told News 12 blood banks currently need all the supply they can get.

The Red Cross says it always sees a shortage in the summer, but donations are staying down as schedules get busier and delta variant concerns keep rising.

Andriena Sosa, the communications manager of Red Cross Connecticut, says each donation could save up to three lives - and with the Blood Donor mobile app, you'll find out when your blood is used.

"I have the app, obviously, and I follow, I'm able to follow my blood,” said Sosa. “And I get a notification when my blood has helped someone. They tell you where it happened and how many lives you saved. So, it's pretty amazing."

"Platelets and Type O blood are always especially needed,” she added.
