Some students from the Brentwood Union Free School District had the chance to be a Suffolk County legislator for the day.
Middle school students who belong to the Youth in Government Club were tasked with coming up with a bill that would bring about positive change.
They had the chance Wednesday to show elected officials that they are the future of public service.
Gregory Walter, a teacher at South Middle School, says students also got to sit in the legislators' seats and see how the entire process plays out.
"It's fun to learn what the government does and what goes on in the community," says Elizabeth Abila, a student from Brentwood.
Some legislators from their district also spoke to students about the position and how they got to where they are.
The students say the experience inspired them to consider a job in public service
