A special recognition was made this Memorial Day as a bridge in Westchester County was dedicated in honor of a Bronx NYPD detective and fallen hero.

As travelers returned from Memorial Day weekend, they'll see a dedication when crossing the NYPD Detective, Tech Sergeant Joe Lemm Memorial Bridge in West Harrison.

"This is a bridge that I cross over, if not eight, 20 times a day," said Lemm's widow, Chritine Lemm.

It's been a bittersweet day for the family who lost Joseph Lemm nearly six years ago, when the technical sergeant, with the U.S. Air National Guard, was killed during a suicide bombing while on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan.

He left behind a wife, two kids and a community that called him "Superman."

News 12 was there back in 2016, as Lemm's 4-year-old son, Ryan Lemm, saluted his father's casket at the funeral. He is now 10 and his stepsister, 22-year-old Brooke Chaco, is about to join the Arlington police force in Virginia.

"I definitely try and live up to his courageous acts as much as I can," Chaco said.

Now whenever travelers drive across the White Plains Avenue Bridge over I-287 in West Harrison, the hope is that they will remember the fallen hero.

"We get the chance to see his name every day," Chaco said.
