The Jones Road wildfire in Ocean County, New Jersey, is approaching 13,250 acres and is only 50% contained as of 8 p.m. Wednesday. As the wind picks up from the south through the evening, the smoke from the massive fire will reach the borough around midnight.
Despite a clear sky, some haze will likely immediately start impacting air quality after midnight. Hazy conditions will likely last all day Thursday as the wind diminishes and keeps the smoke trapped with nowhere for it to go. Both the sunrise and sunset will appear muted and quite red, a unique photo opportunity.
For those with respiratory conditions, please have a mask handy and limit time outdoors. Those who spend long amounts of time exercising outside, also consider limiting the time spent outside. For more on what to expect, see Allan's Instagram reel, follow him @AWxNYC.
There will be a sea breeze that develops by noon, but it is generally coming from the same direction as the wildfire. The combination of the smoke and sea breeze will keep it cooler everywhere. It will be in the mid-to-upper 60s at the coast and up to 71 degrees away from the coast.
It remains rain-free for the rest of the workweek, despite the desperate need in New Jersey. Rain eventually returns Friday night. The best chance will be after midnight and into much of Saturday. There is now a growing chance for thunderstorms midday, stay tuned for updates on that. It will get cooler behind the showers and storms for Sunday, back down to the 60s despite plenty of sun. Despite the cooler temperatures it will be the nicer of the two weekend days.
There is a signal for major warmth next week, with more 80s and even a chance at 90 degrees possible by midweek next week. Stay tuned for updates.
