An environmental group?s latest report shows Bronx beaches may be putting patrons? health at risk.
The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) found that New York City beaches were closed 25 percent of the time in 2005. The group says overflow from sewer drains after heavy rainfall is the main reason behind beach pollution. Advocates advise beachgoers to stay clear of the water up to 48 hours after it rains.
Despite the concern over rashes and other ailments from swimming in polluted water, the NRDC says most city beaches, like Orchard Beach, are cleaner than private beaches. The group says public beaches are usually farther away from drain systems.
