In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and his team used the day to give back to the community the way King would have.
"He was an educator. He was somebody that believed that education was the way for our communities to progress," Diaz said.
Four-hundred students received free Chromebooks outside Bronx Borough Hall, laptops that parents said will make schoolwork a bit easier.
With the help of a generous donation, Diaz's office worked with two schools in the Bronx to handout laptops to students who still need them, devices that students said will help them advance educationally.
Despite the city handing out thousands of laptops across the city, Diaz said there's still hundreds of students who don't have the equipment they need to navigate remote learning and called out to people with funds to step up.
"To anybody out there, put your money where your mouth is and live up to the dreams of Dr. Luther King and help us out," Diaz said.
Another laptop giveaway is scheduled for Saturday but it's only for students who've been picked. Those who are in need of a device are encouraged to fill out a form at the Bronx borough president's
website.
