Volunteers at the Bronx Jewish Community Council spent their Sunday making sure no one will be hungry or lonely for Hanukkah.
The council passed out hundreds of bags of goods to elderly or homebound locals as part of their bi-annual program they put on before Passover and Hanukkah.
Bags included an array of items including eggs, fish, pasta, pancake mix, chocolate coins and more.
Volunteers, some of whom have taken part in this program for many years, came from all over the city to provide some holiday cheer and talk with some longtime New York City residents.
"For some of these people who are completely isolated, it’s really the only one-to-one contact they'll have around the holidays," says Jewish Community Council member Sandy Zelniker.
Mark and Vanessa Mandel came from Scarsdale to help, and spent meaningful time with 95-year-old Holocaust survivor Martin Hilsenrath.
"They really appreciate it, and they invite us into their homes and ask to talk to us," says Mandel. "It's been a really meaningful experience."
