Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the sentencing of a Bronx man who fatally shot a deli clerk in Manhattan.
Kimond Cyrus, 42, will serve 24 years to life behind bars for killing Sueng Chul Choi, 67, inside an Upper East Side deli in March 2023.
Cyrus pleaded guilty to murder and criminal possession of a weapon in October. He admitted to changing into a hazmat suit inside a Bronx building before riding a moped into Manhattan.
Prosecutors say Cyrus approached a customer, displayed a firearm and demanded money before turning his attention to Choi, who was behind the counter.
Cyrus demanded that Choi go to the back of the deli, where he shot him in the head moments later.
Police arrested Cyrus in the Bronx a few days later.
Prosecutors say Cyrus committed three other gunpoint robberies matching a similar narrative across other boroughs.
"Kimond Cyrus was sentenced to a significant state prison term for the horrifying shooting of Sueng Chul Choi as he was working his late-night shift," said Bragg. "Cyrus engaged in escalating turned-deadly gun violence – committing a gunpoint robbery before brazenly ending Mr. Choi's life. Mr. Choi was a father and a hardworking person, and although we cannot bring him back, I hope that his family and loved ones can take solace knowing this defendant has been brought to justice."
